40 calls for journalism/writing pitches (January 1, 2024)
I went running today, in the darkness, rain whipping along with the moonlight, hood pulled tight around my dripping face, exalting in the aloneness of the quiet roads, cozying up to the sound of the wind as it whooshed within the plastic hood over the metronome beat of my running feet as they pleaded with the ground. And I almost didn’t want to mention it, here or anywhere, and that is the introvert writer’s dilemma: the inner experience is enough. There is no need to share; the gratification I get out of thinking a thought is far more powerful than the need I feel to express it, or share it, or write it down. And yet, as Hanif Kureishi said, unless other people read it, it doesn't have any meaning. So to any other introverts reading today, the challenge for the year is to climb out of the inner world, find a thrill in the expression, discover the impetus to go beyond the thought, and share.
