50 calls for journalism/writing pitches (July 24, 2023)
This Saturday I will fly out of Hong Kong on a one-way ticket to the UK, exactly 4,980 days after landing in Hong Kong on a one-way ticket from India. Back then, in December 2009, I had two suitcases, one job and zero expectations. I’ll never forget that horizon-expanding sense of landing in a new place, single, anonymous, not knowing anyone or much of anything about the place, wandering the streets late that first night looking for dinner, finding a place run by a very old lady, asking for a vegetarian dish, she returning with some lettuce in a bowl of hot water, the taxis quietly, politely slowing as they passed in case I needed a ride, the huge towering buildings, the lights, so much brighter than the stars, the 7-Eleven clerk who handed me a single coin of change with two hands, me thinking he was taking the piss, the pretty, doll-like girls, the clean-cut, respectful boys, my sense of dismay on discovering I was not a curiosity to be stared at by the locals, as I was in India, merely one of many white expats mixing and merging with city life, the air-con units polka-dotting every building, the sand-bagging of a walkway during a rainstorm to ensure pedestrian shoes would stay dry, the smells, of traffic, of sea, of Asian rain, of ambition, of pride, of money, the pink Rolls-Royce, the sparkler-pierced Champagne bottles. That feeling was one of pure excitement, total anticipation. Everything known was past. The present and the future were empty and unmapped. Attachments were left behind. The slate was clean. I’m resigned to never feeling that again, but grateful to have felt it once. This Saturday, the two suitcases have become two children, the past has grown and the future has shrunk, and the excitement for what is coming is mostly vicarious. But that doesn’t make it less worthwhile.
