50 calls for journalism/writing pitches (April 24, 2023)
I live on one of Hong Kong's outlying islands. It is a world apart from the neon-lit, skyscraper-laden Hong Kong depicted in every picture, postcard and movie that ever had reason to depict the place. There are no cars, no buildings over three storeys, and instead of dodging fake Buddhist monks and Filipina bar girls, you have to dodge spiders the size of gloves and snakes as silent as mist. In the rainy warmer months I have to shake frogs out of my shoes - which we keep on the terrace - before going to work. This weekend we were walking to the beach, and about 10 minutes into the walk I felt something around my toes. I removed my foot from my shoe - it emerged covered in blood and gunk. I shook the shoe upside down, and a squashed frog plopped to the floor.
Like an idiot, I'd forgotten to check my shoes that morning for frogs. *facepalm* School-boy error. The morale of this tale: always, ALWAYS check your shoes for frogs.
This week’s calls below.
