50 calls for journalism/writing pitches (September 27, 2022)
I realised the other day that I have spent nearly two thirds of my life outside my ‘home country’. I turned 46 years old a couple of weeks ago, and for only 18 of those have I lived in England. The rest have been scattered across East Africa, Japan, India and Hong Kong, and yet I still consider myself English. Not very English; I don’t think I’ve ever called anyone ‘chum’, I drink far more coffee than tea and I show close to zero interest in football. But ask me where I’m from and it’s ‘England’ every time. I might even throw in a ‘mate’. I guess the wandering vine is always conscious of its roots. The travel has of course been a privilege. I am a more open-minded and less suspicious person as a result, I am sure. In fact, for a while I have thought a period of obligatory travel, where you actually go and live in a foreign country for a few months, even a year, should replace obligatory military service that still goes on in many places. Enrich and expand the minds of the young, rather than train them to kill, no?
