50 calls for journalism/writing pitches (September 12, 2022)
Queen Elizabeth II’s death made me think not so much about the British monarchy, though I paused a moment for the family members, and more about my grandmothers, both of whom have passed and both of whom were queenly in their own way. Ethel (‘grandma’), who was gentile and soft and smiley and who let us make cakes following no recipe in her garden, and Constance (‘nan’) who was stern and opinionated and a little bit racist and who once refused to ask the kids a Trivial Pursuit question because the answer was ‘ovaries’. When a queen dies I suppose we are reminded that they are bone and skin and blood and brain, and that we should not be intimidated, or bewildered, and that while we may miss her persona, others loved her and will miss her being.
