50 calls for journalism/writing pitches (May 15, 2023)
I once wrote an article titled ‘In defense of rainy days’, and my thoughts often return to it like they did yesterday, when we were kept mostly indoors during a sodden Sunday. I think of the article for two reasons. First to try and recall the argument I made, to inspire myself to don the jacket, open the door and go out, if I want to. ‘Rain isn't a bore. It isn't a reason to sit around … watching “Baywatch” in Portuguese,’ I wrote in the piece. Second, I think of it because despite the beautifully laid out reasoning and motivating theme, when it rains these days I often find myself staying in. Did I actually believe what I wrote back then? It was published in June 2012, which is long enough ago for me to consider the author a different person. Or was I just hitting a deadline with another deliberately provocative thought experiment, as was my want in those days? It’s worth noting that almost exactly a year later I wrote another article: ‘In defense of staying home.’ We did not watch Baywatch in Portuguese, but we did play the Hong Kong version of Monopoly and we did watch Ice Age 2. Today we have clouds, so I will go for a run.
