50 calls for journalism/writing pitches (February 27, 2023)

Recently we took a trip to Hong Kong's Disneyland. There were bubbles, and balloons, and a hotel garden maze, and a roller-coaster (the kids cried) and a haunted house (the kids cried some more) and best of all, live shows, which the kids adored. Giant animals stood like sentinels around the floor-level stage of the Lion King show, occasionally raising a trunk, or fluttering an ear. "Are they real?" the kids asked, frequently. "I think they're real! They're moving, you can see it's trunk moving!" I love this childhood ability to blur reality and fiction, considered a curse in adults (when you get called deluded or psychotic) but charming and not a little envy-inducing in kids. I rarely pop this imaginative bubble, but go along for the ride. "Yes it does look real doesn't it - how do you think they got it in here? I hope he doesn't steal my popcorn." And then the lights come up and the man steps out of the costume and the kids look at me like I'm an idiot.
