50 calls for journalism/writing pitches (December 26, 2023)
The most stressful moment of the year for any parent of young children is surely December 24, around 11pm. We creep like tip-toeing shadows around the house to retrieve the Christmas stocking and fill it as quietly as possible. Every sound is amplified, every movement constrained. 'Don’t wake them!’ repeats in our heads until the deed is done. My kids are of the age where even the smallest slip-up will send the house of cards tumbling. The boy, 7, warned me last week that he had seen the wrapping paper in the spare room, and so if Santa’s gifts used the same paper he would know he was me. I dutifully went out to buy another batch of paper (and hid it better) to continue the charade. When I was helping the kids position their stockings, suggesting they move them closer to the door, he again piped up: You just want to make it easier for yourself to get them! I gave a stuttering explanation that Santa’s big stomach wouldn’t fit down the side of the bed. In the morning all was forgotten, maybe even forgiven, and the magic was allowed to continue.
