50 calls for journalism/writing pitches (October 31, 2022)
On the island where I live, there used to be a lady who would sit by the ATM with beer cans around her feet, eyeing people who withdrew cash. She wore a dirty, raggedy coat, and her face was worn, and withered, and surrounded by unwashed, tangled grey hair. Her mouth was only half full of teeth, her arms were covered in scabs and scratches, and she lived in a rundown, derelict building in the woods, where she once found her husband dead behind the couch from a drug overdose, after he'd been missing for three days. She died a few years later in that same house when it burned to the ground. When she died, my wife and I asked around about her, and her prior life was very different. She was from a decent British family, and had dreams to dance in a ballet, touring the world with big names like Margot Fonteyn. She had ability, and talent, and promise.
