70 calls for journalism/writing pitches (January 9, 2023)
As promised, this week’s crop of editorial calls is bigger (and therefore better?) than usual. Have at ‘em.
Also, I was reminded just yesterday that one of the great challenges of being a writer - the writing - needn’t be as intimidating as it sometimes is. I suggested to my daughter that she enter a school writing competition. She had to write a story based on a historical figure. I explained a few of the details provided, and within minutes she was off. She had never heard of this guy previously, didn’t know anything about him except she had to make up a story about him, and within 30 minutes she had written close to 700 words. She’s eight years old. I watched as she tore up my keyboard, eyes wide with the excitement of invention, lips mouthing every word as it hit the white screen. Oh to rediscover that child-like fearlessness of creativity. I’m not sure exactly when those grown-up self-aware doubts arise, but I can remember getting hold of a drawing I had been looking forward to coloring in for weeks when I was a kid. And when it was laid out flat on the table, pencils at the ready, I was paralysed: what if I screw it up? The uncolored outlines held such promise, so much perfect potential. My additions could only lower that bar.
