75+ calls for journalism/writing pitches (June 23, 2025)

What are your thoughts on the recent ‘an editor stole my idea’ fiasco running over on Twitter/X? Freelancer Angel Martinez pitched Grace DeGraaf at Business Insider: “Would you be interested in a feature about how Gen Z is golf’s newest target market?” No thanks, was the reply, only for this exact topic to then appear on BI a few weeks later. The “tragedy” was screenshot by Martinez here. Notice how I call her pitch (if you can even call it that) a ‘topic’. It’s barely an idea. It’s certainly not a strong story; simply observing a trend and then naming this trend to an editor does not give you rights over every story within that broad topic. Could the editor have done better? Yes sure. She could have communicated things in more detail. When she realised she wanted to run the story after all she could have gone to the original pitcher (she assigned it to a different freelancer). She could have involved the OP in some way. But the OP could also have done better. She could have pitched a proper story, not just thrown out a single line describing a broad trend. She could have worked on gaining access to something that would make her story/pitch stand out, and be unrepeatable by someone else. She could have cited stats, facts, named interviewees etc etc. Learnings both sides of the email divide from this, methinks.

Calls for pitches below, now with extra details (where available).
