I once was told off for wearing flipflops. I was working pre-covid in an office-bound job for a major media company as a travel editor, and one day, when the weather was warm and the weekend only a day away, instead of pulling on the socks and shoes I got into shorts and flipflops. A meeting came and went, and as I settled into my desk the boss’s voice loomed through the air: "If I ever see you wearing flipflops again…" accompanied by a stern grimace. When I observed that the women wore open-toed slipper-type shoes every day, "You can send an email if you feel strongly about it," came the passive-aggressive reply. That exchange must have stayed with me, because I've worked remotely for years now, and have always, unthinkingly, pulled on socks and shoe. Until this week. Look at me now!
